Hosting a Potluck

Hosting Guides By Gina Holzer

Hosting a potluck is one of the easiest ways to get people together and enjoy delicious food and drinks. That being said, it is still nice to have guidelines to go by to ensure a successful event, which is exactly what I am providing you with today!

For starters you will need to pick the date and time of your event.

Next decide on a theme, which will likely be determined by the time of year it is (for example: Christmas, Easter, summer BBQ, Cinco de Mayo, etc.).

Once that is decided you need to make a guest list. Use a signup sheet such as freepotluck.com to coordinate which guests will bring what items. Things to consider on your signup sheet are appetizers, salads, main dishes, sides, desserts and drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic). It is a good idea to have a variety of dishes, which is why I recommend at least two to three dishes of each type of item to provide enough options for everyone. In addition to this you will need to confirm if there are any dietary restrictions or allergies that need to be considered. Some additional things to mention on the signup sheet are the amounts of food to bring for each item (example: enough to serve 10-12 people), as well as having guests sign up to bring plates, napkins, cups, cutlery, serving dishes and utensils. Also, mention to the guests that they will need to label their dishes and utensils unless they are disposable.

On the day of your potluck, you will need to prepare a space and make sure there is enough room for all the dishes, and have some space available in the fridge for extras. Then you will need to set up the area with plates at the beginning of the buffet line followed by main dishes, salads, sides and desserts. Have napkins and cutlery at the end of the line and a separate area for drinks. Lastly you may want to have to-go containers available for leftovers.

Hopefully this guide will help you stay on track in preparing properly for your potluck event! Enjoy yourself!
