Hosting Guides By Gina Holzer

A bat mitzvah is a very special time for a young lady to signify her transition to adulthood. Hosting this significant event takes a lot of planning and careful consideration. Follow this guide and you will be on track for a spectacular event!
Key planning and party essentials include the following:
- Venue and atmosphere- You should book the venue 12-18 months out. Be sure this venue will have the appropriate lighting for your event as well as lounge seating and furniture and a large dance floor.
- Entertainment- You will want to hire a DJ/MC or live band with high-energy. To keep the guests engaged and the party going strong. Make these arrangements 12-18 months prior to the party. If you hire a photographer/videographer, they will need to be booked that far in advance as well. Renting a photo booth with props will add additional entertainment value.
- Food and drinks- Around 12 months from the event you will need to hire the catering service.
- Decorations- Themed center pieces, personalized napkins and cups as well as any signage that will show the guest of honor’s personality will add to the ambiance. Candles and a candlelight display are crucial for the atmosphere. The theme will determine much of your decorations. Some common theme ideas are candy/dessert bars, bohemian lounge styles, favorite sport or music, and nature inspired themes like enchanted gardens and beach parties. Start planning and purchasing your event decorations to include centerpieces, lighting, color scheme, and decoration placement around the 6-month mark. Also provide a guestbook at the door.
- Invitations- should be sent out 2 months prior to your event. Save-the-dates go out 9-12 months in advance. The RSVP date should be 3-4 weeks from the time of your party. Be sure to include all necessary information as well as the theme.
- Attire- For women and young ladies, modest dresses, no bare shoulders, formal or semi-formal is acceptable. Dress code for men and boys is business-casual and formal.
Some additional things to consider are ordering kippahs, creating a slideshow and making a spreadsheet to track RSVPs and gifts from the guests. You may want to hire a party planner to help organize and keep the planning process moving forward. If so, this should be done in the 12–18-month range.
Despite the amount of work that goes into this special occasion it is totally worth it to have your family and friends celebrate together. Hopefully this guide has been helpful. Mazel Tov! Enjoy yourself!!
