Hosting Guides By Gina Holzer

How sweet it is to turn 16! Throwing a Sweet 16 party for your very sweet 16 year-old can be a challenge. There is a lot of planning involved that can be overwhelming. From getting a cake to picking a theme and entertainment can bring on heavy anxiety. No need to fret! With the following guide I will lead you to a sick (that’s what kids say these days, right?) Sweet 16 celebration!

The most important, but least exciting part is to find a budget that works well for you.

Once this has been decided, you can move forward with the rest of your planning starting with the venue. Will you be hosting it at your home, maybe renting a space or having it at an activity-based venue like a spa day? All of these are totally acceptable. It will just depend on your budget and of course what the party girl of honor desires.

Next will be picking a date and time for your event and making a guest list. Order invitations and send these out at least four weeks in advance. Be sure to include who it is for, date, time, location and RSVP information.

Choosing a theme will be your next task. Your sweet 16 year-old will most likely want to have a lot of input in this matter. A masquerade ball, tropical luau or classic Hollywood are all popular options. The theme will most likely determine what type of decorations you choose. Balloons, banners, streamers, tablecloths, plates, napkins, cake toppers are all things to consider for the most festive approach.

Planning for entertainment is a crucial step. Hiring a professional DJ will take your party to the next level creating high energy through the roof. A photo booth with props is also an excellent addition to your party as an engaging activity to keep guests entertained. If you do not hire a DJ, karaoke is a solid option for fun as well as having a 16-year-old approved music playlist.

Food and drinks will just depend on the time of the party. Offer easy-to-eat foods like chips and dips, pizza, sliders, veggie and fruit trays. Plan ahead on the cake. Will you have someone prepare a special cake with the party theme? If so, you will typically need to give at least a month (sometimes more) notice.

Lastly, you’ll want to send those girls home with a party favor or two. Some popular age-appropriate ideas are custom tumblers, makeup bags or personalized photo keychains.

There are some extra smaller details to remember such as a lighter, birthday candles, a cake knife, tape and scissors for decorating, phone or camera for capturing party fun and a gift station to place gifts.

Well, that pretty much wraps it up. I hope this has been a helpful guide and that your Sweet 16 year-old has the sweetest party they could ever imagine with the least amount of stress for you! Enjoy yourself!!
