Hosting a Classroom Party

Attention all homeroom Moms, Dads and classroom volunteers! Is there an upcoming classroom party that you’ve been nominated to plan? Well, no need to fret. I’ve got a basic guideline that will help you be prepared and have the best results come party day.
Let’s start off with decorations for the room. If you’re planning a holiday themed party the easiest thing to do would be to select items such as tablecloths, banners, ballons, streamers, plates, napkins, cups and cutlery that are themed to that holiday OR just get solid colors of those items to match that holiday.
Next thing to tackle will be food and drinks. You will need to reference the school’s policy as well as check with the teacher for any classroom allergies prior to making any final decisions. It is a good rule of thumb to have 2-3 healthy options such as fruit and veggies, cheese sticks/ cheese cubes or yogurt tubes, 2-3 fun options such as popcorn, pretzels, crackers, mini muffins or chicken nuggets and lastly 1-2 dessert options such as cookies, cupcakes or candy. Drinks can be simple with either small, bottled water, juice boxes, a themed punch or hot cocoa at Christmas.
Activities, games and entertainment will be your next big priority. It is fun to have music playing in the background, specifically a playlist of preselected music that fits the holiday theme. Games like freeze dance, musical chairs, bingo, charades and spoon races are all classics to consider.
It is also a good idea to have a craft station set up for a hands-on activity. Cookie decorating, making holiday cards or a holiday themed craft are some options.
Towards the end of the party, it may be wise to do a calm down activity such as reading a book or doing a color page.
Some items to consider for clean up are paper towels, trash bags and wet wipes for sticky hands and surfaces.
Depending on the holiday you may want to provide a small gift for the teacher. Something as simple as their favorite coffee or fountain drink is thoughtful or even a gift to their favorite place to shop or eat.
On an ending note, I strongly suggest starting planning ahead of time AND asking for help from others with the planning and execution of the party. Try making a signup sheet to see if there are any other parents willing and able to help out. It is not impossible, but difficult to pull off a smooth party on your own.
As mentioned before, these are your basic guidelines for putting a classroom party together. You can go way bigger or even tone it down, but either way you should be properly prepared to put on a successful classroom party! Enjoy yourself!
